What is Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new year based on a lunar calendar, which follows the cycles of the moon and its relationship to the sun. For this reason, the holiday falls on a different date each year, typically between late January and mid-February.

What is Lunar New Year Celebration?

The Lunar New Year—also called Chun-jie (meaning Spring Festival) in Chinese, Tết in Vietnamese, and Seollal in Korean—is widely celebrated in China and many other Asian countries. The festival begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and concludes 15 days later with the first full moon. Its origins date back more than 3,000 years to ancient China.

Each Chinese Lunar Year is associated with one of twelve animals in a repeating 12-year cycle. In order, the Chinese zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. 2026 is the Year of the Horse, a symbol of energy, independence, optimism, and forward momentum.

The Lunar New Year is a time for family reunions and joyful celebrations. Traditional customs include hanging red lanterns to ward off bad luck, displaying door couplets to express hopes for the coming year, creating paper cuttings to invite happiness, and placing upside-down “Fu”(福) characters to symbolize the arrival of good fortune. Come join us at the Cherry Chase Lunar New Year celebration and experience these vibrant traditions together!
