What is Lunar New Year?
The Lunar New Year is the observance of the start of a new year in the lunar calendar, which means it’s based on the cycle of the moon as well as on Earth’s course around the sun. That’s why Lunar New Year typically occurs sometime between January and February. It’s on a different date each year because the calendar goes by the cycle of the moon.
What is Lunar New Year Celebration?
The Lunar New Year, also called Chun-jie (meaning Spring Festival) in Chinese, Tet in Vietnamese, Solnal in Korean, is typically celebrated in China and other Asian countries. It begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. Its celebration originated in China more than 3,000 years ago.
Do you know each Chinese Lunar Year is associated with an animal with 12 years as a cycle? In order, the 12 Chinese zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. 2025 is the Year of the Snake, which symbolizes wisdom, intuition, and transformation.
The Lunar New Year holiday is a time to bring family together for feasting, with traditions like Red Lanterns to drive off bad luck, Door Couplets to wish the best for the coming new year, Paper Cuttings to bring fortune and happiness, Upside-Down Fu Characters to “pour out” luck! Come join us to experience some of these traditions at the Cherry Chase Lunar New Year Celebration!
This year’s celebration is open to the Cherry Chase community. We welcome all families to join. The more the merrier!
